With a win on the road at Oxford Uni the previous week, hopes where high for a repeat performance at home. Clear blue skies and a moist tiger, the scene could not have been set any better for the Dons 2XI to move into 3rd place and bring promotion to The London Prem that little closer.
The visitors today where league leaders and last years Prem rejects Old Loughtonians. Having lost only twice this season, this was not going to be easy, but with probably the strongest squad of the season (that I have seen) and knowledge that our local rivals the 3XI had beaten them away from home this season, moral in camp was high.
The game started at a furious pace with action at both ends. However, the Wimbledon forward line where not able to convert a number of chances and with the only short corner of the 1st half not working as well as it has been in previous weeks, goals were not looking like they were going to be easy to come by. Old Loughts were able to convert their chances and went into the half time ‘Haribo’ and ‘Jelly Baby’ break 2 to the good.
The second half brought more of the same end to end action with a short corner won early in the half. With 1st choice flicker Martin taking a 5 minute break this meant that 2nd choice special teams had to take to the plate. The corner was blazed past the post at a furious pace, still 2 – 0 down.
Wimbledon continued to press forward, but paid the price for not capitalising on their chances and conceded a 3rd goal to make it look almost impossible to force a result from the game. However, the fight back was reignited when Toy squared the ball to Bretton under controversial circumstances, to slot the ball into an open net. It was game back on with 10 minutes left on the clock.
There was time for one last twist, with all of Wimbledon’s haste to chase a 2nd goal they forgot their defensive duties and conceded a 4th and final goal to seal the match for Old Loughts.
Next week is a tough away trip to our very own 3XI, with hopes of promotion still alive after our opponents managing to providing, not for the first time this season, another upset against a top 3 team with a 3 – 0 win away at Spencer.
